My vegan friend took my husband and I here. For dinner I had the nachos, and they were pretty okay. The "meat" (a crumbled black bean patty, I think) was really dry. My latte was gross. However, I was told the main reason to go is the sweets. My husband and I got sweet potato muffins (so good), a cinnamon roll for mom, and a lemon scone for dad (they really enjoyed them). Our zucchini bread was moist and fluffy and delicious.

I concur with Nacy's post. I tried their treat last week in my nephew's birthday party. I love it.

Love, love, love City Cakes! This is the best vegan bakery in town, period. Their tiramisu is so delicious and one of my favorites. I do love their peanut butter/chocolate bars though too. I frequently take cookies into customers from City Cakes and usually just get a mixture of what they have on hand. My customers LOVE them and I am now begged to bring more of their lemon cookies. Funny, because these were a cookie of the day, and randomly selected as part of the dozen I purchased. I am always thanked for my business, encouraged to try new treats, and walk away feeling like my business is appreciated. I highly recommend City Cakes. They are way better than Cakewalk, your only other vegan bakery option in SLC. Trust me, you will leave with a smile on your face, and in your belly. : )

Well, I tried to give City Cakes my business. No where on the website is there a minimum time listed for a simple birthday cake. Received a less than warm welcome when calling. Taking my business now and in the future elsewhere. Good luck with your customer service!

i tried their gluten free bread, cupcake, and cinnamon bun but....they were all wayyyyy too sweet for me. they were all really moist though.

My best friend and I dropped in this afternoon for a bite to eat and some rad vegan treats. We were treated horribly by one woman in particular...short black hair, early 20's. Wish I knew her name, would out her in a heartbeat! Aside from the frozen edamame/quinoa salad and completely lackluster tiramisu, we witnessed a dog get run over outside the cafe. With the sound of screaming tires, screaming people and the cries of a dog in complete agony no one came out of the shop to see what the hell was going on! So between the total lack of humanity from the staff, totally abhorrent behavior directed at myself and my friend and the rather shite food? I'll never be going back and fully intend on finding the owner's number and giving them an earful about this. Do Not Eat Here!!! Addendum: Owner contacted and is being totally supportive of the situation. Updating to 3 stars...cafe food was still subpar. I can't speak to the quality of the cakes as of yet. Given the owner's response I'd consider going back if i needed a cake and didn't have time to bake one myself.

Not my kind of place, things look good but could be better. I felt like I was a bother because I was looking too long and asked to stand back when no one else was there... Definitely not going back anytime soon

The gluten free pies are amazing - and that's not easy to do - they sold over 150 the day before thanksgiving! It's fall so fall in love with their pumpkin muffin - actually it's winter but it's still amazing - not to mention the lovely lady working the counter even let us sample some tasty treats.

I was so pleased to discover that there was a vegan bakery near my overnight stop in SLC and headed over first thing. I was amazed and completely indecisive in the face of so many options! I got a lemon bar, a ginger bran/oatmeal muffin (it was huge!), a chocolate peanut butter bar, a peanut butter cookie and some other goodies for the road - I was set for the next three days of my trip - excellent decaf latte with non-soy options as well. Cute place, nice folks. I just have to wonder though - leather sofas in a vegan bakery? Please tell me that was fake leather!

  • Logan P.

Awesome food. Best chocolate chip cookies ever (probably debatable) And go ahead and try finding another bakery open on Sundays with the same quality. I'm not much of a gluten free, vegan guy myself but hell, good food is good food.

  • Kacey K.

This is my favorite bakery in town. Not only do they offer gluten free options but they are 100% vegan. My favorite are the chocolate cookies, maple sandwich cookies and the peanut butter bar. I would also recommend checking out the vegan mac and cheese and the bean burgers. I buy the 6 pack of burgers and bring them home. You can also buy cookie dough in bulk and make the cookies at home. The only reason I don't give 5 starts is because the drinks aren't the best. I have ordered a couple chai teas and all lacked flavor.

I bought a full cake there, which they customized for a specific celebration writing stuff on it. The service was great. They have free nice ice cold water, and the one girl that helped me was beyond beautiful and I totally wanna marry her.

This is my favorite food and drink stop! Local. Animal and earth friendly. Delicious. Great service and atmosphere. Incredible!!! City Cakes, I'm your biggest fan!

Extensive vegan menu!... ice cream...cookies...desserts galore! I only had a drink, but I'l soon return for some grub.

  • Brian O.

I called at noon and asked if they had any "pre-made cakes" in stock. The person who answered said they had plenty of cakes! I asked her if she could write on one so I didn't have to wait when I came to pick it up. She said "no, because a lot of people never show up. Just come in today and we can do it quickly". Totally understandable! I showed up at 3pm only to find a girl with an attitude. I told her my name and that I had a cake on hold, then asked her to add the message. She then told me the people who write on cakes were gone for the day. Thanks for nothing!

Delicious food and friendly staff. I had a raspberry lemon bar, and I would never have guessed it was vegan.

  • Karen F.

I don't go out for sweets often, but when I do City Cakes is my top choice. They have a lot of vegan options and they are all baked fresh. I took my German Club there and they all really liked it (and nobody else is Vegan). The cakes are very rich, so be warned, but delicious. I have not tried their food, only their cakes and desserts.

  • Steph P.

Love this little place! I especially love that they're open Sundays. So few bakeries are open in Salt Lake City on Sundays, and it's a shame. What's better than a latte and a baked good on a lazy Sunday?! Thanks to City Cakes, I can have both! I love to take my laptop to work or study and make an afternoon of it at City Cakes. Mac & cheese for lunch, then a peanut butter bar and an iced latte for dessert. All that good food makes for great productivity. The selection is great at City Cakes. The quality is extremely high. The staff is wonderful.

Now this is a pretty cool joint. In fact, I'm not sure I'm cool enough to frequent the place, but if you promise not to tell anyone I'll divulge that I'm planning on going back. It's not that it gives off a "too-cool" vibe. On the contrary, it's got quite a "come-as-you-are" vibe to it, but that's what makes it so cool. Plenty of places to plop down and enjoy your sweet sweet snack of choice. Let's say that you're vegan. You come to City Cakes, see the cases full of vegan treats, and pass out from pure delight. Now let's say that you're not vegan. You come to City Cakes, see the cases full of tasty treats, and pass out from pure delight. Either way, you're knocking your head and then soothing the pain with a decadent cookie, muffin, brownie, bar, or one of the other delicious baked goods at the place. You can also choose from a decent variety of gluten-free goodies. It will take another visit or two to see if all five of those big bright stars really have a home here, but it's pretty certain they do. I guess I'll just have to go back over and over again to try it. You know, in the name of research.

I'm a pastry snob and the thought of a baker who'll compromise a dessert simply to appeal to a specialty audience like vegans or the gluten-free strikes me as somebody who should be ejected from the core of the baking faithful and have oven privileges revoked. Yelpers decreed, however, that I needed to try City Cakes, so I bit the bullet. And I am glad that I did. I've tried several cookie flavors and the peanut butter bar, all of which were quite nice. If you want to find nirvana in a fluted paper cup, though, get yourself a sweet potato pecan muffin. Whoa Nellie, is it an adventure. Real sweet potato flavor, not something that you tend to get in most baked goods, complimented by a nice collection of autumn spices with big pecans all through the cake-like consistency of the muffin. I have been back twice in an indecent amount of time. Awesome stuff, and my apologies for the harsh mental judgements on being ideologically impure. I doubt I'll ever try your vegan or gluten-free offerings, but with chops these serious, whatever fringe societies you dabble in are easily forgiven.

We were excited to stop at this place because of all their vegan dessert options which are hard to find. We bought a variety of things. My husband is allergic to dairy so this place was perfect for him. The desserts ended up tasting so-so and he got horribly sick from them. Not sure how vegan they actually were :(

    (1)
  • Nichole A.

My friend had her wedding cake made here as she is gluten intolerant. It was the BEST lemon cake I have ever had. I am not much of a cake eater, but I could not stop myself from going back for seconds... make that fourths!

    (5)
  • Ainsley D.

Cute cafe, I loved all the vegan and gluten free options. I opted for the ginger cookie and a soy mocha, both were pretty tasty. My friend got the mac and cheese and it looked SO GOOD. Definitely getting that the next time I go back. Cozy and a good place to catch up with friends :)

I LOVE City Cakes & Cafe! The gluten-free, vegan items are delicious. Houston needs a place like this.

    Amazing little find.

  • C W.

I had given up hope on finding a tasty vegan cheese sauce, and then this place comes along and sells tubs of it for 3$. It is amazing. I made some mac n cheese at home with it and added some margarine and WOW. I also had a cheesecake brownie, a bagel w/hummus, and a couple of days later the spousal unit brought home a red velvet cake. There is a reason this place is always hoppin! Everything is SO CUTE there too (including the staff)! They have almond milk in case you forget to buy some for your cookies/cakes/whatever. They've got a for life customer now. Keep up the good work!!!!

  • Matt H.

Amazing desserts, reasonable prices. I was looking for dairy free, no problem. All items are vegan. About half of the items are gluten free. Adjacent bakery provides for a nice atmosphere. My only suggestion for improvement: consider non-corn alternatives for starch.

    (5)
  • Courtney K.

Being able to eat a gluten free donut was amazing! The cinnamon sprinkled one was amazing - although, one of the others I ate had a strange after-taste. Also, I would love to have the nutritional value of the products. Thanks!

  • K.T. R.

The cupcakes were dry and tasteless. The service was awful. I was surprised with all the good reviews with as bland if an experience as this but then someone told me that most of them are friends or employees. It figures... Save your money and make your own.

    (1)
  • Daniel H.

Delicious bakery. Been here several times, each time getting a different thing and it really seems like they can't do any dessert wrong. I'm a big fan of the waffles with strawberries. Those were absolutely terrific. The service is very friendly, it's clean and quiet. Great place to just come, snack on a treat for a little while and take a break. Love City Cakes.

I was in my cousin's wedding this May (she is vegan) so she had City Cakes make her assortment of cupcakes for her big day. The man who delivered them was great, and they arrived looking fabulous. I've had some vegan baked goods before that left something to be desired, but the cupcakes from City Cakes were fabulous!! I sampled the red velvet (my fave) and a lemon flavored one. Both were moist, a great size (not too big or little) and the frosting was very tasty...not too sweet or overpowering. Vegan or not, if you are having a wedding or other party definitely consider getting your treats from City Cakes! I don't live in Salt Lake, but next time I'm in town I will definitely stop by.

  • Tanaz P.

Hello tasty! Your vegan delights are more than worthy of my mouth. I was surprised to find the likes of you in a place like this. You put a smiles on my face and an inch around my midsection. Thanks for brightening up my travels to S.L. ut.

  • Marissa H.

Super rich desserts, be forewarned. Triple chocolate brownie smacks you in the face with chocolate & chocolate chips inside. Gluten free Peanut Butter bar is spectacular - chocolatey-graham style sits below oozy peanut butter topped by hard chocolate that crunches when bitten. Bite size peanut butter cookies are yummy Sweet potato muffin has a sugary coating that's insanely delicious & the muffin is really moist. Cute inside with a small patio for when it's nice out. Too many options (a good thing!)

  • Adrienne M.

Love the lemon bar cake! Vegan food that tastes as good as it looks! A bit pricy bit worth it!

    (4)
  • Shauna S.

Wow. One place with gluten free and vegan meals and desserts. Thank you. Especially loved their "cheez" dip, peanut butter cookies and zucchini bread.

  • Inconspicuous V.

I'm sorry to review such a low score but I was really looking forward to a good cupcake. I was recommended to try the red velvet and it was HORRIBLE. I took a bite and threw it away. The texture was dry and the taste was just not good and definitely not worth the calories and fat I would have consumed. (Isn't that always the measurement?) Maybe it's because I'm from the land of Sprinkles cupcakes and it seems like the standard for California cupcakeries not to mention private bakeries are pretty high. This just was not good. Sorry guys.

  • Claudia H.

Gluten-free yumminess. Cookies, muffins, all good stuff. Go here. Really.

    (5)
  • Megan E.

It took twenty minutes for them to make a burned bagel. I am a regular customer. Not anymore.

  • Lacey O.

I was so disappointing with City Cakes! The tiramisu and lemon bar were actually kind of gross! We weren't even interested in finishing them. The latte was decent but we ordered it sweetened and I'm pretty sure there wasn't any syrup in there. We also didn't finish it until we got home to add a little flavor. I wish we would have kept looking.

  • Abby W.

This is one of our definite stops every time we are in town. Pretty much everything from here is fantastic! We discovered it while I was vegan and they have an awesome selection of Traditional and Vegan desserts. Husband loves their brownies. I'm a big fan of their cupcakes and cookies. The atmosphere is really relaxing. I could spend a long time just relaxing in there. The employees are nice and super helpful. Ask for their suggestions, they are sure to be good :)

  • Lizzy P.

Vegan & Gluten Free! Lots of variety to choose from. I got the lemon blueberry scone, a chocolate cake donut & a cup of coffee with soymilk. I liked what I had.. I think the scones could have been less dry, but the flavor was good. I would like to come back and try the cakes and lunch items. 4 stars for now, but maybe that will change next time I visit.

  • Townie M.

Yes this is a pastry and coffee shop that doesn't open until 8 AM who is ever heard of a coffee shop that opens after 8 AM the worst part is I was standing looking in the window they all saw me no one waves and no one offered to open the door so I can have a cup of coffee....it was 740 in the morning.

As a person with gluten and dairy allergies, my choices in baked goods are extremely limited, and I'm often stuck spending a lot of time and money for very little yield. Not with City Cakes. I am so impressed with and grateful for their fresh daily goods. In addition to having a lot of gluten and dairy free products, many of them are ALSO vegan friendly. Their loaves of bread are baked fresh every day and are large, filling and nowhere near as expensive as the kind you would find frozen at the grocery store. City Cakes has been a life saver!

  • Chris S.

I love City Cakes. There Vegan cookies and Mac and Cheese are the best. They are pretty affordable as well. However just because its vegan doesnt mean its low calorie ha ha but still very good!!!

    (4)
  • Madeleine G.

LOVE! Shocked to learn that are vegan, mostly because they are DELICIOUS. Cinnamon rolls are awesome, love the scones (especially anything with a citrus glaze), and cakes are great. My girlfriend picked up a carrot cake for my baby shower and it was fantastic. The only thing that I've had from City Cakes that wasn't really my favorite was cheesecake, which is not that surprising since cream cheese is probably hard to replicate as vegan ingredient. One of my friends has gluten tolerance issues and CC&C always have some gluten free goodies in the case. Though I'm not sure how stringent their cleaning and baking methods are so it might not be the best for a someone with serious Celiac disease, but I love that they offer gluten free goods so my buddy is not left out when the rest of us are enjoying goodies.

    (5)
  • Thrintone M.

The gluten free peanut butter cookie is amazing. They taste just like I remember real cookies tasting. I don't love the sweet breads as much, they always seem a bit undercooked, but the cookies are perfect!!

    (5)
  • Andrea C.

I love me some city cakes. I like this place a whole lot because it's got a mix of vegan and traditional style desserts. And sometimes, I feel a little less guilty eating a decadent dessert if it's vegan, even if it does have a couple hundred calories.. But aside from the desserts, this place has a full scale coffee bar, gluten free options, and some lunch items as well. Everything's made in house, and it's all super fresh and tasty. Some of my fav's from City Cakes would be the muffins (it's hard to get a good muffin in this town, and by god, these are the best I've found), latte's with almond milk, and the SOUP. I am a huge soup fan, and everyday they've got at least two different homemade soups to choose from. Awesome, wholesome, and not too pricy, I'm happy City Cakes is in my life.

I love a good treat once in a while! Ok, maybe more than once in a while. This place has been around for a little over a year and I'm glad to say they are doing well for themselves. -Great customer service. -Traditional as well as Vegan pastries (cookies, brownies and lemon bars.. oh my!) -Clean and inviting inside. You actually want to stay and eat your treats over a cup of coffee and conversation with a good friend. -They also have a regular food menu and have lunch specials. I got their lemon bar (whoa now) on my first trip in and it was amazing. Anything lemon, and I am in. My friend got a peanut butter cookie that was dipped in chocolate. Vegan/vegetarian joints are becoming more and more frequent in UT and I am more than ecstatic about how much the SLC is growing. This place is pretty close to the 9th and 9th area if you want to hit a local theater, restaurant or any of the cute local boutiques before or after you consume your City Cakes goodness.

Disclaimer: I am not a vegan. I do love baked goods, and when they're this good I don't care if they have animals in them or not. This place has a really good variety of baked goods, vegan, traditional, and some gluten-free. Seems like most people would be able to find something that hits the spot. My favorites are the ginger cookies and the scones. The ginger cookies are amazing, and I stop by for my fix regularly. The ginger cookies are in fact so good that I still come back for them even though I no longer need to. The deal is that my gallbladder went through a long and trying reign of terror during which most "normal" food disagreed with me. The fact that City Cakes had cookies I could actually eat was a total lifesaver. Like, on a bad day when all food made me want to die, the fact that there was at least one thing on earth that wouldn't make me sick really kept the despair at bay. Thanks for that, City Cakes. Thus, I have awarded City Cakes one additional star because they are awesome for providing delicious alternative food for those who cannot or do not eat dairy.

Best Cakes and best variety of desserts in Utah, hands down. The place never disappoints for desserts.

    (5)
  • Maria B.

This place is amazing. They have the best muffins I've had in the US including a seriously delicious gluten free pumpkin muffin (doesn't taste like gluten-free at all!) and a heavenly banana muffin. Very nice ambiance with big windows and plenty of space. Free wireless.

I had gone by this place a ton of times, but it used to be Cocoa Cafe which I did not like at all (in the same location). So, I had been hesitant to check it out until recently I read the sign closer up and it said vegan! YESSSSS!!! So tonight after a fabulous dinner at another great local place, we decided to check it out. Holy crap, best ever!! I had the gluten free peanut butter bar and my bf had the triple chocolate brownie. I asked if the gluten free bar was vegan and the girl at the counter said "everything in the case is vegan!!!!" OMG, best day ever!! It is super hard to find good dairy free desserts, this is it. Both of our items were amazing and the service was good. I am definitely heading back to this place soon!

  • Alice Y.

This place is a-dor-a-ble. They're open relatively late for a bakery (hence the cafe part), so I stopped by after dinner for a treat. They have free wifi (didn't work for me, but seems to have worked for the other people hanging out in there with their laptops) and also have a selection of vegan baked goods, if you're into that. They also have vegan soft serve, if you're into that. I wasn't, but lemme tell you- my ginger softie cookie was GOOD! Gingery, not too sweet, and just the right amount of crispiness around the edges and just the right amount of softness on the inside. They have a mix of cafe tables along with a few arm chairs and couches. I'd say it looks like a great place to meet up with a friend to catch up. There was a group of people next to us who had bought an entire cake and were having a birthday celebration there- I'd say it's a pretty good place for that sort of thing too! It's right next to Channon Thai, in that little strip mall.

My boyfriend and I came here today since I recently turned vegan. These are by far some of the best cupcakes I've had, vegan or not. I highly recommend the lemon/coconut cupcake and the raspberry lemon poppyseed cupcake (gluten-free) is one of the most delicious cupcakes ever. Highly recommend this place. Has a great cozy atmosphere and friendly staff.

  • Wes N.

Ate a very tasty chocolate chip cookie, didn't even know it was vegan. Awesome mac and "cheese", also vegan. Everything is vegan except a couple items like the "traditional" tart. Loved this place! Give it a try, even if you're not vegan, I think you'll find it to be delicious. The spot is also an awesome hangout location, with seating indoors at various levels and outdoors. I would definitely be hanging out here and meeting people here if I lived in this hood. I forsee City Cakes & Cafe becoming a regular stop during my visits to SLC.

  • Rachel F.

Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. We stopped here during our road trip passing through SLC with admittedly low expectations. But no, City Cakes has truly fantastic treats. The two of us managed to order two muffins, two scones, and mac n cheese. I can't believe it's all vegan! I've had some good vegan mac n cheese in my life, but never with cashew cheese sauce---so good! The muffins and scones were the best vegan baked goods I've ever had. They have a lot of gluten free items as well. I wish I lived in SLC just so I could spend every day here, eating baked goods, drinking coffee, and doing work with the free wifi.

  • Tara B.

I LOVE CITY CAKES! I would go here every time I visited my boyfriend. But he has now moved to NYC with me, so I'm sad to think it will be a long time until I ingest the yumminess that is City Cakes again. I think City Cakes is better than Babycakes! There, I said it. It's the truth. I love getting the Lemon BlueBerry Scones and the Peanut Butter Chocolate bars. Their birthday cakes are delicious, and they have a good selection of gluten-free desserts. If you are ever in SLC, you must go here!

    (5)
  • Nathanael S.

This is where I wake and bake. The waffles, sandwiches, mac & cheez with a scoop of chili in it were great. And the desserts were amazing. This is how a lemon bar should be. Everyone else should take notes on how city cakes gets it done.

    (5)
  • Devin S.

There are no words to describe how much I love this place. Their cupcakes are AMAZING, especially the coconut lime. The cheesecake, also AMAZING as well as the different lemon bars and peanut butter bars. I wanted to buy everything but couldn't. I had my carnivorous friends taste everything and they were really surprised, they thought it was delicious! I was able to sample the soy soft serve and it was the best soft serve I have ever had in my life (that includes dairy soft serve). I honestly don't have one complaint about them and have been many times. Love them!

  • kevin c.

Stopped at this little bakeshop during my cross country roadtrip. Holy moly -- their blueberry lemon scones were the best scones I've ever tasted (and I'm not even a scone guy!). Their other stuff was pretty standard. My best friend had a coffee or a latte from them. He said it was really bad ... so ... yeahhh. But good job on the scones!

    (3)
  • Erin N.

I decided to give this place a shot when ordering a birthday cake for an upcoming party. The server was very patient with my decision making process and helped me pick out the best combination. The cake was a hit. If it wasn't for my big mouth they wouldn't have known the chocolate cake was vegan. I will definitely choose City Cakes again.

  • Kylie C.

This place is FANTASTIC! It smells like heaven as soon as you walk in. The cinnamon roll was hard to pick up and put in the box because it was so fresh, the scones are amazing. The flavors aren't weird, but just different enough to be original. My dog LOVES the doggy treats and the gluten free/vegan options are fabulous. Yes, some of the things you can tell are gluten free but some things you'd have no idea. Very good. The mocha cookie was okay, the chocolate chip was amazing ... and the almond/poppyseed muffin was out of this world.

    (4)
  • Francesco P.

I really enjoy their treats every time I go. In particular I'd recommend the cinnamon rolls, poppy seed muffins with icing, and the Mac and cheese.

    (5)
  • LuLu R.

With the fresh made assortment of muffins and other bakery items you have a variety of tasty treats to choose from. On Saturday mornings my husband will stop and get muffins (I was trying to think which is my favorite but they are so delicious I could not choose it was like trying to pick which of our dogs is my favorite) and coffee, which starts a weekend off right.

    (5)
  • Greg C.

At first, it was hard to even tell if they served more than deserts but a regular helped us find the menu's. The Mac and cheese is decent but the burger came up short, kind of mushy and we all had heart burn later. Inside was kind of noisy but, there were a lot of kids. The peanut butter cookies were awesome. I don't know if I would return but many others seem to love it so try it for yourself.

The vegan cupcakes here taste absolutely delicious. I especially like the Dillos.

I am Gluten Free and Egg Free. Let me tell you, there is no other place in town that offers more options for my taste buds! The GF/Vegan frosted sugar cookies are to die for, my teeth hurt just thinking about them. Besides the sugar cookies I've had the GF/Vegan zucchini bread, choco chip muffin, and donut. All such a treat for someone usually stuck to a limited variety of food options. Thank you City Cakes!!

    (5)
  • Melanie S.

Best cheesecake, tiramisu, and mac and cheese! Everything else is fantastic as well, but these definitely need to be tried.

    (5)
  • Jennifer M.

Gluten free heaven in salt lake! With the blizzard in nyc we are stuck in utah. We happened to eat thai next door to city cafe. We saw that they were vegan and hoped to find gluten free baked goods. Did we! They offer gf cookies, peanut butter bars, carrot cupcakes and lemon blueberry scones. Everything was delicious. The scones were out of this world! This bakery rivals the best gluten free bakeries where we live in new york city.

  • Tong F.

I have a friend who is vegan and she buys baked goods from City Cakes and bring to work and share with me sometimes. Some of the cakes and dessert are very nicely done and even people that are not vegan like them. So far my favorite is the cinnamon rolls from here. Thanks to my friend Katie for introducing me to this place.

I love City Cakes! I've been gluten-free for nearly 20 years and while many places have tried to offer GF treats in the past few years, none have done it as well as City Cakes. Their GF red velvet cupcakes are delicious and just the right sweetness and texture. Their GF donuts are also very good and not too dry and crumbly- as is often a problem with GF donuts. The atmosphere is lovely and the service is always friendly. I've found a new favorite sweet spot!

I had vegan mac & cheese and it was surprisingly delicious. Great treats as well. Cool atmosphere, a great place for vegans and non vegans alike.

nearly everything on this cafe's menu is vegan. "traditional" items are not vegan. impressive: slice of red velvet cake not impressive: red velvet cupcake impressive: espresso cupcake impressive, but: chocolate peanut butter bar and the double chocolate brownie. these two items are incredibly rich. you should probably share them with someone, as they may be too rich for one person to stomach. and definitely add a glass of (non-dairy) milk to wash it down it. impressive when: cinnamon rolls. they are good at any point in the day. but are AMAZING when they are fresh. i stopped by in the morning once and a batch had just finished. the woman who baked them literally slathered the frosting on right before she handed them to me. they were to die for! i have not had any of their lunch items. just the baked treats. the ginger cookies are yummy. the chocolate chip cookies are soft and tender. i didn't like the macaroons, but that may be because i don't really love coconut flakes. they have pumpkin cupcakes that are divine, but they are probably seasonal. seating is plentiful. cafe and bathroom are always clean. there is outside seating. street parking right in front. free wifi.

Wowie!!! Seriously delicious. It was four for four - donuts, cinnamon roll, sugar cookie, and snicker doodle. we had to go back before we left to catch our flight!!! my friends also thoroughly enjoyed their waffles, pumpkin muffin, and gluten free lemon cupcake. CRAZY good - probably the best vegan bakery I've ever been to!

Never had anything bad from this place. Amazing vegan goods. I especially love the non-dairy mac and cheese, made with cashews and roasted red peppers. DELICIOUS. I crave it on the regular. There is a friendly vibe in this place. Gingerbread cookies, marvelous. I had a sweet potato muffin the other day that blew me away.

It's always hard for me to find vegan desserts when I have sweet cravings. On my last trip to Salt Lake city, I found out about the cafe/bakery but was skeptical about it and though that would be another one of those place that has only very limited selection of vegan goods. Wow... Was I up for a surprise or what? Most Items in this place are vegan! There is a huge selection of cupcakes, bars, cookies, cakes etc... We went there 2 days in a row my daughter I and we tried a bunch of goodies (nine items between the two of us in two days). Everything was good! My personal favorites where the raspberry lemon bar and the waffle with fruits. They also offer a few lunch items, the mac and cheese definitely brought back some good old memories! The owner is on site and she is a very nice lady, everything is made fresh everyday and the cafe looks great and cozy . I will definitely go back there if I visit Salt Lake again.

Best Cookie Sandwich! Didn't really enjoy any other treats I've gotten though. Limited selection of items as well. Lot Parking makes it easy though pretty easy to drive right by.

Came here for the first time back in August. All I have to say is: Screw this place and their delicious, mouth watering lemon blueberry scone. Now everytime I come back to visit SLC I gain 10 pounds because I can't resist their vegan baked goods. What a bunch of jerks.

I love this place! We celebrated my daughter's birthday recently and since she is allergic to dairy we ordered a custom vegan cake. It turned out beautifully and was delicious. I also love the triple chocolate brownie and the lemon blueberry scones are yummy!

Delicious! My husband and I stopped by on a whim (he was motorcycle shopping and I, tagging along, was hungry and found the place on Yelp). We got the vegan macaroni and cheese (I'm not vegan, but I was intrigued) and the regular (non gluten free) peanut butter bar. Both were absolutely delicious and I will definitely be coming back! Also, my dog loved their organic dog treats. The employee was very friendly and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing.

One star review? Not in your life. Amazing selection. Open on Sunday in a city that is still practically a ghost town on Sunday and the customer service was excellent. We had the peanut butter bar and orange cranberry donut and numerous cookies for our long drive black to Denver. Get your GF a Dairy free freak on her people. Denver needs something like this stat!!

Update: I have been a loyal customer of City Cakes for years now, eating there about twice a week on average. Their baked goods and soft serve are incredible. I bought cupcakes from them to celebrate the conception of my son, and their burgers to serve at my husbands graduation bbq. However, I am so sad to say, that today was the last day that I will be back. Their customer service is so horrible, lately I leave there either feeling pissed off or genuinely hurt. City Cakes employees if you are reading this: You are driving away customers! I have spoken to the manager and have e-mailed the owner who, "won't take calls." At least my wallet and waist line will enjoy my boycott. It will also be fun to explore the menus of other vegan establishments. From a few days ago: I've been a regular her since they opened up on 900 South. Their baked goods and food deserve 5 stars! I only give them 3 stars because their customer service leaves much to be desired. Also don't drink the coffee, just DON'T DO IT. and don't tell them that their coffee is horrible because they will explain that it's awful on purpose and they take pride in the fact that their employees don't even know how to use the coffee maker correctly, because they, "don't want people coming just for the coffee." This is a huge issue for me. I like to enjoy a cup of coffee with my pastries, so I'll be bringing my own from home from now on. City Cakes if you are reading, Next time you dump chocolate milk all over someone's kid please offer to help clean it up.

Ugh, what a disappointment this place has become. We've actually gotten back into our car and driven to Vertical when we see the annoyed redheaded gal working. It's just not worth interacting with someone so angry.

We've had a $20 giftcard here for over a year and somehow hadn't made the 10 block trip out. We got in within about 30 minutes of them closing and asked what was good. They set us up with the mac and cheese au whatever cheesy potatoes, peanut butter cookie, red velvet cupcake, peanut butter bar, and something else that my girlfriend asked for. We sat down and partook. The mac and cheese was nice and creamy. I can see why they sell their sauce by the bottle. The au potatoes were good, but not as good as the mac. The desserts were what really made the trip. The peanut butter bar was heaven. It was huge and heavy, just how I like my peanut butter bars...the cookie was great, all of it was good...and there are so many more things we haven't tried. We will definitely stop by in the future. The price is good and the food is great.

I ordered the vegan mac & cheese, a peanut butter/chocolate bar, & a lemon cupcake. The vegan mac & cheese wasn't my favorite. The pasta was good but the cheese tasted like boxed mac & cheese & was bright orange. I found myself wondering what they used to make it so orange. The peanut butter bar was probably the best I've ever had but it's a large size so make sure to share it! The lemon cupcake was pretty standard. The cake was good but the frosting was a bit much. I had hoped for a stronger lemon flavor. Hoping to try some of their other entrees soon. The place is cute & the staff is super nice!

I'm giving this place a 4 based on all the different vegan and gluten free options prepared nicely and sold by attentive staff. But the taste, for me and my friend, was closer to a 3. Don't get me wrong, the gluten free peanut bar, gf double chocolate cookie, and gf chic chip cookie were good, but not as good, IMHO, as everyone is letting on. Still a solid tho!

I'm a cinnamon roll snob, plain and simple. Whether it's the gooey nigh-inedible glaze of the airport Cinnabon or the overly raisin-filled roll of childhood past, I have consumed it. Call it a comfort food if you must. The cinnamon roll at City Cakes is unimaginable. I hate icing. Hate it. The icing on this roll was too good to be true. I couldn't believe it was vegan! Absolutely delicious. I came back this morning so I could verify my lucky stars. The poppy muffin was great as well. And their scones aren't bad. But the true standout is the cinnamon roll. Their cookie dough, for fulfilling the holy up-its-own-butt-trinity of gluten-free, vegan, and made locally, was similarly incredible and quite delicious. We didn't bother making the cookies, we just ate it with a spoon, no regrets. Vegan baking is in. No more day-old Smith's baked goods for me!

I cannot say enough good things about this place. It's all vegan, but it's seriously good enough that you would never know. My non-vegan husband LOVES this place. There are also plenty of gluten-free options. I found City Cakes in 2012 when I was looking for a wedding cake. I got a traditional cake as well, but a lot of extended family and friends have food allergies, so I wanted to find something delicious for them (and myself, who am I kidding?). I was determined to do a vanilla cake with raspberry filling but, at the cake testing, the chocolate cake with vanilla frosting blew me away. Honestly, one of the best cakes of my life (and, again, gluten-free and vegan!). PS they give you you a FREE anniversary cake, so you don't have to freeze the top layer ;) The gf cupcakes, gf peanut butter bars, gf sugar cookies, and gf donuts are my favorite desserts on the entire earth. I've also gotten their chili a number of times and it's been delicious every time. Just an fyi: they do the local thing, so the vegetables and beans are different every time (sometimes there will be mushrooms in the chili, and other times there will be red peppers, etc.). Just a few things: 1. a lot of stuff has soy in it, so be sure to ask. They can make special orders, though, so if you've got your heart on something, just give them a call a day or two in advance and they can make it soy-free. 2. Frosting for special orders is either soy or sugar-free. I'm like 99% positive they can make everything else both soy and sugar-free other than the frosting.

Such a great place! I'm seriously here 2-3 times a month. A must stop for any special occasion, cakes, treats, etc. Or, anytime I happen to be downtown, I'm in Dutch with the wife if I haven't stopped in and picked up a treat. My favorite is the Gluten Free Double Chocolate Chip cookies! I'm not gluten intolerant, but the cookie is unbelievable!

I bought an assortment of sweets here for my boyfriend on his birthday. He doesn't have any dietary restrictions, but I do. Have you ever tried being celiac and then discovering a place that has gluten free doughnuts? I ordered two doughnuts and two cupcakes and brought them home in an unlabeled box. My boyfriend got to them before I did and was stuffing his face, saying they were the best cupcakes and doughnuts he'd ever had- without knowing they were gluten free! It's shocking because most often these types of sweets don't taste good to those who are used to regular sweets, but he was none the wiser!! The doughnut with the raspberry core was my favorite thing hands down, but it was all delicious. I was first introduced to the store by my vegan friend. She loves the vegan cookies. They sell awesome flour substitute which I use in my own kitchen. Their peanut butter bars are great and so is the lemon cupcake with pink frosting.

while doing the parade of homes we stopped by here for a quick snack. all of their treats and food are vegan and they have several gluten free items. i got a GF scone and a GF cinnamon roll. they warmed up the scone for me and i ate it there. it was very dry and flavorless. i had to drink a lot of water to get it down and was a bit disappointed. next i had the cinnamon roll which i thought was pretty good. too sweet of course, but was delicious none the less. texture was a bit hard, but i'm use to that with GF products. i plan on coming back to try their lunch items, but will probably pass on the desserts next time.

I love this place. Let me count the ways (and calories) ... Their donuts are SO good. You can find them at some Whole Foods in the city, but why not get them directly from the source? I've also been obsessed with the marzipan cake lately -- SO moist and sweet. Their scones and cinnamon rolls are also excellent, the latter best when absolutely fresh, but both will stay for a few days on the counter. This goes even more for muffins. Especially the sweet potato muffin. While it's true that not everyone wants to eat sweet potato all day long, I'm pretty sure everyone can enjoy this muffin. I also think most people look behind the milk steamers. ALMOND MILK STEAMERS. Peeps, it doesn't get much better than this. Make sure they put enough of a flavor shot in, but they'll adjust it if need be. They have a small but decent sitting area, free wi-fi, nice staff and a decent location. I've had a few friends now hate me for showing them this place of sugary delight.

Delicious vegan bakery with many options. Also have tons of gluten free options. Spectacular Mac and cheese and now they are selling their Cheeze sauce! I'm vegan but have taken many non-vegan friends and they love it!

One of the few (maybe the only?) bakery in Salt Lake City that provides vegan pastries. I have a vegan co-worker so on the days I agree to bring muffins to our morning meetings, stopping by City Cakes is a must. I was dubious myself, just because eggs and baking seems inseparable but I loved the multiple muffins and donuts I tried from City Cakes. If you need vegan or gluten free baked goods, City Cakes is the place to go!

Yesterday around 6:00pm after work I stopped in to grab something sweet for dessert. The selection is a bit small for a bakery but if I was into gluten free cookies I would have had a ton to choose from. I didn't know if I wanted a lemon bar or a cinnamon roll so I asked the employee what her favorite item was and she smiled and said she loved the cinnamon roll and it was a customer favorite. Both employees were very friendly even to the customers in front of me who apparently didn't know this place was vegan and were upset they didn't have normal cream cheese. Anyway, I took my cinnamon roll home in its happy little box and warmed it up later to eat it. It was a solid good old fashioned cinnamon roll. Was it particularly special in my opinion.... no but it was good and so I was happy with it and finished the whole thing without feeling bleh. For a vegan cinnamon roll I was pretty impressed. I'm vegetarian not vegan, so I will admit, butter definitely makes better baked goods, (Morning Bun at tulies with real butter is better) but I think it was good enough to warrant another trip back sometime in the future.

Yum! Yum! The food is fantastic!!!!! We were passing through on our way from Houston to Portland and stopped in here - so glad we did! We had potatoes, and a sandwich and some wonderful bakery items, and bought some extra treats to take with us. Absolutely loved the pumpkin parfait! That is a must have!

I was very impressed with this adorable little bakery/cafe. The employees really knew their product and I asked a million questions about ingredients (allergies) and they didn't bat an eye. I'm sure they are used to the interrogation, as they carry some gluten free items here. All items are vegan, but only some are gluten-free, so if gluten isn't your thing be careful when you select stuff and ask if you aren't sure. For my tree nut allergic pals, I am happy to report that no almond four is used in their gluten-free goods. I'm not allergic to gluten, I was just curious. I had a gluten free iced sugar cookie that was pretty darn close to the real thing. The frosting is what made me ohhhh so happy. The cookie itself had a slightly dry texture but it was tasty. The vegan GF chocolate chip cookie tasted absolutely no different than any other chocolate chip cookie I've had! So good. They have vegan Mac n cheese which sounded awesome, but alas the "cheese" is made from cashews. I may have pouted a little. My little nursling doesn't do dairy so I've been missing some stuff like crazy lately and this bakery fills the need in a major way!

They don't bill themselves as a vegan bakery, and for good reason. I probably would have passed them by if I knew everything was vegan. Plenty of great items that look wonderful and taste even better! They have a small cafe and free wi-fi. Drop by, you'll be glad you did.

It's hard to find a good Vegan/GF pastries and I have to say this is one I always go back. I really love the scones and Vegan Cheese. I ordered once a vanilla cake for my none Vegan friend, she loved it and couldn't believe it was Vegan!

City Cakes used to be one of my favorite places to eat, but it has gone downhill. I decided to stop in after the gay pride parade for a sandwich. I ordered the full sandwich and a gluten free peanut butter bar. My order came to $8, and they brought out half a sandwich and a peanut butter bar. Not wanting to cause a scene, I ate my midget sandwich while my wallet sat there in pain. The sandwich was a huge disappointment so I moved onto my peanut butter bar. Those things are absolutely amazing, and are the only thing keeping this from being a 1 star review. I'm not quite sure if I will be back.

My oh my, am I glad I found this place! I popped in to grab something cute for the boyfriend for Valentine's Day (he just cut dairy and is mourning his loss of junk food options). I stood there like a drooling idiot for probably about 15 minutes trying to decide what to get for him, and how much I should selfishly buy for myself and scarf down on the drive home. Literally everything looked fantastic, but I finally settled on a beautiful single-layer carrot cake for him and one of those famous chocolate peanut butter bars for me. The carrot cake is phenomenal. My boyfriend's already eaten half of it!! The spices are nice and balanced, the nuts and raisins are quite present without being overwhelming, and the frosting is just plain luscious. The chocolate peanut butter bar was heaven in my mouth. Crisp, decadently dark chocolate on top; melt-in-your-mouth, nougat-y peanut butter in the middle; and some sort of dream-like chocolate peanut butter brownie as a base. I hoped for red lights all the way home so I could reach over and grab another bite and make obscene noises of gustatory ecstasy. To top it all off, the staff was just as pleasant as the pastries and the shop was bright and cheery. I wanted to stay all day long! I'll be back, City Cakes. You couldn't keep me away with a stick.

I went here with my 2 year old daughter and we both had a good time. Their coffee is awesome as well as the gluten free blueberry muffin we ordered! Soooo goooood. We had to go back for a scone and that was just as amazing. I think it's great that they also sell pre-made gluten free cookie dough (vegan too). It's great for everyone because there are no eggs -- who doesn't like to eat raw cookie dough?! The staff was very friendly as well, which I enjoyed. Overall, just a great little place.
